Men are twice likely to suffer infertility with less sleep than women

-Dr Sagarika Agarwal, IVF Expert, Indira IVF Hospital, New Delhi.
Men are twice likely to suffer infertility with less sleep than women

New Delhi: Sleeping too little or too much can affect a man's ability to impregnate his partner. The best time to rest is 7-8 hours and if the duration is less than 6 hours or more than 9 hours per night, the probability of making their partner conceive reduces.

Men are twice likely to suffer infertility with less sleep than women

In any given month, men who slept less than 6 hours or more than 9 hours per night had a 42% reduced probability of conception.

“A strong association with sleep seems to have an impact on male fertility and snoring may be the first signs. Men who suffer disturbed sleep had sperm counts equal to only 70% compared to those who slept normal and are less likely to impregnate their partner. Testosterone is crucial for reproduction and the majority of daily testosterone release in men occurs during sleep. Total sleep time, in turn, has been positively linked with testosterone levels. Those who suffered disturbed sleep with less than six hours a night also had lower sperm quality and smaller testicles. Poor sleep interferes with the body's ability to produce sperm.”

Snoring most nights and feeling excessively sleepy during the day are classic signs of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Snoring affects twice as many men as women. It occurs when the soft tissue in your nose and throat vibrates when you sleep. Being overweight, drinking a lot of alcohol, smoking and allergies are all triggers. This means the person stops breathing for 10 seconds or more at a time, several times a night. Over time this can cause heart problems and even stroke.

Infertility is a widespread problem. A man’s fertility generally relies on the quantity and quality of his sperm. If the number of sperm a man ejaculates is low or if the sperm are of a poor quality, it will be difficult, and sometimes impossible, for him to cause a pregnancy.

Out of 20% of infertile couples the problem lies solely in the male partner and 5% of them have some kind of fertility problem with low numbers of sperm in his ejaculate. However, only 1% suffers from azoospermia – no sperm in his ejaculate.

It is difficult to diagnose male infertility without medical tests as there are no obvious signs. There will be no difficulty in intercourse, erection and ejaculations and even the quantity and appearance of the semen looks normal. Through medical testing, the doctor may be able to find the cause of the problem.

Male infertility is usually caused by problems that affect either sperm production or sperm transport. Poor sleep for more than 3 weeks may cause lower sperm count, deformity in shape and deteriorate its mobility About 70%of infertile men have a problem with making sperm in the testes. Either low numbers of sperm are made or the sperm that are made do not work properly.

Sperm transport problems are found in the rest 30% of them. Blockages (often referred to as obstructions) in the tubes leading sperm away from the testes to the penis can cause a complete lack of sperm in the ejaculated semen.

It is possible that poor sleep duration could contribute to an unhealthy lifestyle, decreased libido, a decrease in sex. Appropriate sleep hours (between 7 to 9 hours) helps to optimize men’s fertility and their chances of contributing to a pregnancy. Eating more fruits and vegetables yields better production of sperm than meats and fats. Men who are at a healthy weight generally have better fertility, too.

International Women’s Day Nurturing Womanhood: Columbia Asia Hospitals, Ghaziabad Launches Columbia Venus, a special Pregnancy Support Program for Women

Ghaziabad, March 14, 2017: As we celebrate International Women’s Day, Columbia Asia Hospitals, Ghaziabad today announced a special campaign on ‘Nurturing Womanhood’ through a series of dedicated programs for women, including a comprehensive maternity care initiative and health screening programs.

International Women’s Day Nurturing Womanhood: Columbia Asia Hospitals, Ghaziabad Launches Columbia Venus, a special Pregnancy Support Program for Women

In many ways, motherhood is the essence of womanhood, and the nine-month journey to motherhood is among the most fruitful journeys of life. Columbia Venus is a special pregnancy support program that allows a woman to enjoy the experience of childbirth, while everything else is taken care of.
Columbia Asia Hospitals, Ghaziabad will offer this special program to expecting mothers, who will be provided counseling, guidance, support as well as special health services right from conception to pregnancy to childbirth, to make their journey as smooth and joyful as possible. Apart from the Columbia Venus initiative, the Hospital also announced another special program dedicated to women, in the form of the ‘Women Wellness Package’
.
The two initiatives were announced by Mr. Gaurav Khurana, General Manager of Columbia Asia Hospitals, Ghaziabad, who urged women to be more proactive about their health.

“Women’s Day is an opportunity for all us to give back to the women in society who make our lives more fulfilling and beautiful. As a healthcare institution, our observation is that women in India are not as proactive about their health as they should be. The practice of regular preventive screenings is almost absent. At the same time, there is lack of holistic maternity care services for them. Keeping these issues in mind, we are offering two special healthcare initiatives for women of the city on this Women’s Day,” said Mr. Khurana.

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year to celebrate the cultural, political, economic and social achievements of women globally. It is also a day when we look forward to giving back to the women who have made our lives richer and more meaningful.

“The process of child birth is exciting as well as difficult. Women going through this phase experience a series of anxieties, health worries, and need expert guidance and help at every single step. Through Columbia Venus program, our objective is to become a partner with expecting mothers in their journey towards motherhood. The program will cover all aspects associated with pregnancy, right from pre natal counseling, helping women conceive, aiding them towards healthy pregnancies and helping keep them fit and ready for childbirth. The program takes a comprehensive approach to maternity care and involves expert help from not just gynecologists and obstetricians, but also counselors, psychologists, and fitness experts,” said Dr. Vinieta Diwakar, Consultant Gynecologist, Columbia Asia Hospitals, Ghaziabad.

Apart from the Columbia Venus initiative, the Hospital also announced another special program dedicated to women, in the form of the ‘Women Wellness Package’. The package offers a holistic screening program crafted specially for women, and covering diseases and disorders that are most common in women. The package will include screenings for breast cancer, cervical cancer, thyroid, and bone density.

“Throughout their reproductive years and beyond, women experience a series of health concerns and disorders from hormonal imbalances to brittle bone disease. Unfortunately, the culture of preventive health screening has not caught up among women in India. More often than not, they tend to ignore their niggling health concerns much longer than advisable. Our special package for women is aimed at encouraging women to adopt the practice of regular preventive screenings. Health screenings for breast cancer and cervical cancer are highly recommended, especially to women above 30 years of age,” said Dr. Diwakar.

Cairn India empowers women to be the change agents

Hyderabad, 08th March 2017:
Gender equality is important not only for the corporates but for the entire society. Cairn India Ltd. has always been a crusader for the socio-economic empowerment of women, especially in its operational areas. Below are some initiatives by the company in this direction:-

Cairn India empowers women to be the change agents

Cairn India empowers women to be the change agents

1        Skill development and employment opportunities

Through its 7 satellite centres, the Cairn Enterprise Centre (CEC) has provided various vocational trainings, career counselling, and linkage to employment opportunities to over 7,000youth and women since 2007.  In the current financial year, 1241 people have been enrolled, 945 youths have completed academic and On Job Training and 905 trainees have been placed through the program. In an area like Barmer in Rajasthan where the community has limited employment opportunities, this program has been instrumental intransforming the lives of women.

1.1 Masonry and Dairy management training

In a move away from the usual vocational training courses for women, such as sewing or handicraft, Cairn India has empowered ~300 women to be trained masons. All these women also go through a provisional literacy program specifically designed for them. This ensures that after completion of the training, they are not only financially independent but can also face their social challenges more effectively.
At CEC’s Dairy Development Programme, ~1270 women have been trained and appointed to take care of the cattle and to ensure that the milk reaches the dairy centre on time. The programme has helped the local women uplift their socio-economic status significantly. Cairn has helped set up 18 SHGs having 342 members from the savings earned out of selling milk. These SHGs have been able to secure a loan of Rs 14 Lakhs from ICICI Bank for starting their entrepreneur setup like Flour mills, bangle shops, tailoring machines, grocery shops including re-investing back into the dairy business.

1.2 Success stories

The masonry training proved to be a boon for Shugni Devi’, a mother of three at Bhimda village in Barmer. Once trained, she could break the social barrier that prohibited the local women to go out of home for livelihood. Today, she and many other women masons like her are helping to build toilets as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Similarly, Chanchal Jain from a conservative family in Barmer aspired to establish her own identity at a very young age. The CEC helped her and many other youth from the region by training them for the entrance test for HDFC Bank, one of the largest private sector banks in India. A month long course not only honed their aptitude, numeric ability, and English language proficiency but also groomed their personality for the corporate life. Post the training at CEC, Chanchal was immediately selected by HDFC Bank. Today, she is a role model for many girls of her age in Barmer.

2        Promoting entrepreneurship

Another proven way to empower women in rural India is to establish Self Help Groups (SHGs). Women from the marginalized section of the community get together and form SHGs, which help them in times of need (emergency, disaster, social reasons, economic support, etc). The CEC also provides financial support to help these women to start their own businesses. Approximately 450 women have been trained under Agri NRM project and started growing vegetables for own consumption as well as selling in the market.

3        Access to safe drinking water

Considering that water is a scarce resource in the arid land of Thar, women need to walk miles to fetch drinking water for their families. This precious time can be used for other skill enhancing and income generating activities. Therefore, Cairn Indiaexecuted a major sustainability intervention to support the Government of Rajasthan (GoR) in providing safe drinking water to communities in Barmer and Jalore districts through Water ATW (Any-time Water) kiosks. Moreover, constructing water harvesting and storage tanks in villages of Rajasthan where Cairn India operates immensely benefited these women. Now they can devote more time to skill enhancement, family care and their own health.
As a result of the above initiative, reach of the safe drinking water doubled from 30,000 to 60,000 community members in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. Average Water consumption also increased 3.5 times from 24,000 to 90,000 liters per day. This was accomplished by expanding the water distribution mechanism.

4        Providing direct employment

Surasaniyanam is a remote village in East Godavari district in coastal Andhra Pradesh. The Ravva JV onshore terminal, operated by Cairn India, is village’s first and the only tryst with industrialization.
Aunique women empowerment initiative by Cairn India in the village is -- The Suraksha brooms making unit. Started in December 2014 with 6 women as direct beneficiaries, the unit today receives supply of raw sticks from about 120 economically weak households from the project area. The project has helped women, who are the driving force of this business, to save money, live a better life and educate their children.

5        Women health

Aimed at women and child wellbeing,Project Rachnaby Cairn India stands for Reproductive and Child Health Nutrition & Awareness (RACHNA). So far, it has been implemented in three blocks of Barmer district namely - Baitu, Sindhari, and Dhorimanna.
The project’s goal is to bring down the maternal and infant mortality, and to improve menstrual hygiene and reproductive health of adolescent girls and women in Barmer district. Under this project special campaign is being undertaken to educate the adolescent girls on menstrual hygiene management and addressing the myths associated with this key topics. Through this initiative so far we have covered and educated more than 600 adolescent girls (of both school going and non-school going girls) and developed exclusive puppet video to address this key issue.
Further, contributing to the Government of Rajasthan’s initiative of “BetiBachaoAbhiyaan”, Cairn India has introduced a unique campaign to celebrate the birth of a girl child around the operational areas. Under this campaign, the company presents a “New Born Baby Kit” to parents of the baby girl born in government hospitals and institutions. This kit consists of a clean towel, two sets of dresses, socks, toys, a mosquito net, and an immunization check-list. The kit also has a message embossed on how a baby girl brings happiness to the family. The campaign will increase awareness about the importance of institutional delivery that brings down the Infant Mortality Rate and Maternal Mortality Rate.

6        Women leading the change

Cairn India believes that when women are empowered, they can be the change agent for the society. Therefore, through its various unique initiatives, the company aspires to enable more women to cross social barriers and chart out a new future for them, their families, and the society.

Drilling through the gender wall in the Oil & Gas industry

By - Madhu Srivastava, Deputy Head – HR& Admin, Cairn India and Head- Diversity & Inclusion, Vedanta Group

Despite a long (and ongoing) struggle for gender parity at work, many industries and job roles were not equally open and welcoming for women until recently. Traditionally, women were considered suitable for job roles that had fixed working hours, well-defined and comfortable working conditions, and most importantly- social acceptance. However, with the changing social landscape and mindset, the scenario has changed rapidly. Now there is no shortage of success stories of women who defied the social and corporate norms to accept and excel in various job roles considered unsuitable for women 15 years ago. But, not all the industries have got the same success with gender equality.

Oil and gas is primarily a male-dominated industry. Extreme working conditions like high or low temperatures, remote operation sites, and requirement to stay away from family for long periods does not let many women join the industry. Regardless of various industry initiatives to attract more women to join the oil and gas industry, the numbers do not tell a great story. An analysis conducted by LinkedIn in 2015 found that women make up just 26.7% of all oil and gas industry profiles on the professional networking site. This represents the lowest proportion in any of the dozen industries examined for this study. Healthcare has about 59.8% women while there were about 30.6% women with technology profiles.

Another lady in the Men’s World?
Arpita Pandey, Petroleum Engineer at Cairn India

Arpita Pandey, started her journey with Cairn in June 2015. Prior to Cairn, she was associated with another Oil and Gas organization for 3 years. Moving to Cairn was all together a new and a different experience.

“I still remember my first day in Barmer when Arunabh Parashar introduced me to the field team- ‘One more lady in the Men’s World’, and my journey at Cairn begun. I was new to people, to the working condition, everything was too new for me at Cairn. But People of Cairn did not let me feel the same for a longer time. When I look back now I find my ‘Cairn Barmer’ journey as one of the most adventurous experience of my life. My bosses at Cairn have always been very supportive. They have always given me opportunities to learn new things and implement it on work. I am a proud Petroleum Engineer. It is only because I have got such a nice platform to perform. At Cairn, I got a chance to work on many other Petroleum Operations as well. I worked at isolated locations as well and never felt unsafe or uneasy. I believe that we like our work only when we like the surroundings and people around.
Above all, I feel privileged working at Cairn. This organization made me more robust and diligent. Now I am nowhere lesser than a Man…J

The above scenario does not paint the brightest picture for the industry. However, the silver lining in the cloud is thatour industry has realized the need to have a gender balanced workforce and have taken policy initiatives in the right direction. As a result, we can expect the career prospects for women in the oil and gas industry to improve significantly in the coming days.
Cairn India believes that Diversity and Inclusion are important pillars of a successful and sustainable organization. Women employees play a major role in bringing varied perspectives, collaborative decision making and ideas, and can collectively create superior outcomes for the business. Therefore, the company has in place best-in-class people policies and practices that create a conducive environment and foster a healthy gender diversity in the organization. There is for instance a clear mandate to focus on gender balance while hiring entry level talent from universities as well as lateral talent and also for appointing women in key revenue generating roles at the leadership level.

From Heels to Safety shoes…
Arpita Borthakur
Petroleum Engineer, Cairn India

Arpita recalls 14th July 2014 as her happiest day after being placed at Cairn India Limited. She wasn’t new to the firm as she had interned with the company.

It was during her internship, when she first heard of Barmer. A super exited young girl was all set to explore the oilfield. She had imagined working amidst sandstorms around the well in middle of sand dunes, until she came face to face with the reality.

“This three years long journey has never been a cake walk. Working in the extreme weather conditions, climbing up and down cellar pits was more like an adventure every day. These years havetaught mea lot, not only about the Oil and Gas industry but also about life as a whole.I learnt to work with different people in an industry dominated by men, at times even supervising them. ”

The company has in place best-in-class and progressive women-friendly policies in place. These include enhanced maternity leave of 6 months, adoption leave and paternity leave. Gender parity and inclusive opportunities are amongst our top organizational priorities. There is also a strong emphasis on preparing women for future leadership roles. For example-Tarang is a developmental program for women in leadership roles in Cairn India. Started as a program for individual development, it now covers the entire women workforce at the company, providing training on financial acumen, strategic thinking and business management.
Cairn India works towards reinforcing a culture where diversity of gender, thoughts, experiences, ethnicity, personal orientation, dis/ability status is valued by one and all. Cairn Diversity and Inclusion Council (D&I) has been tasked with responsibility of architecting the overall Diversity and Inclusion strategy for the Organization. It aims at achieving greater diverse representation all across the organization at all levels and geographies, through well-defined initiatives

Women bring a new dimension to thought leadership, execution and outlook to the business. They add immense value to projects and create teams that deliver outstanding results. Global insights demonstrate a strong positive correlation between gender diversity and business performance. Energy companies would do well to ensure more women on across the organization- not just in corporate offices but also on remote sites.

Women under 35 facing lower than normal ovarian reserve

New Delhi: Somya (34) conceived successfully with the help of IVF after being diagnosed with low Anti-Muller Hormone (AMH).

“AMH is a hormone secreted by cells in developing egg sacs (follicles). The level of AMH in a woman's blood is generally a good indicator of her ovarian reserve. These tests are also useful in evaluating ovarian function and possibly in predicting the onset of menopause which is usually around the age of 45 years. With the changes in lifestyle and the urban area’s ambience, woman’s ovarian reserve is depleting before time.” said Dr Arvind Vaid IVF Specialist, Indira IVF Hospital New Delhi

AMH is also done for a woman who will be undergoing assisted reproduction procedures such as in vitro fertilization (IVF); the value of AMH present is related to her likely responsiveness to treatment. A low level of AMH reflects poor ovarian response, indicating that a decreased number of eggs would be retrieved after ovarian stimulation. For a good correlation and comprehensive evaluation, it is usually done along with other hormone tests and a transvaginal ultrasound (to count the number of follicles as a reflection of the woman's egg reserve).

Women are born with their lifetime reserve of eggs, and these gradually decrease in both quality and quantity with age.

“Urban lifestyle depletes the number and deteriorates egg quality prematurely in women . With the increasing age, the body is affected by poor dietary intake, poor blood circulation, disturbed hormonal balance, autoimmune disorders, and other health problems. The dietary and lifestyle choices you make also improve the quality and health of your eggs. Elimination of toxins and stress is equal to improving fertility and chances of conception. “ says Dr Anuja Singh, Senior IVF expert, Patna

AMH is a hormone produced by reproductive tissues. Its role and the amount normally present varies depending upon sex and age.

Women of childbearing age may have an AMH test ordered along with other hormone tests, such as estradiol and FSH, to estimate the ovarian reserve.

Some ovarian cancers produce increased levels of AMH. If the hormone is initially elevated, then the test can be used as a tumor marker to help evaluate response to treatment and monitor for recurrence.

Other female hormones fluctuate with a woman's monthly cycle; however, AMH is produced by growing follicles at a relatively steady rate. It is also not affected by oral contraceptives or pregnancy.

The company has a team of well-trained female doctors and advanced technology platforms such as Electronic Health Records (EHR) and health feeds, which are licensed from USA. Some of the significant women health issues addressed by the online service include: fertility, pregnancy, thyroid, PCOS, weight control, menopause, etc. Women can use their mobile phones to connect with a trained female physician in less than a minute. Celes' empowering, patient-centric approach has already helped over 6000 women during the company’s pilot phase.

Different women have different health and well-being requirements during different stages in their lives. Celes Care is designed for long term care so that a woman can keep visiting her “own doctor” as well as access health records throughout her health care journey.

Mr. Raghu Bathina, CEO of Celes Care said, “We are extremely delighted to launch Celes Care, a complete telehealth platform for women. In today's stress filled society and workplace, women must have an avenue where they can get their health issues addressed, conveniently and privately. We at Celes Care are committed to revolutionize health care accessibility via our unique combination of deep medical expertise and technology innovation."

"With over 10,000 consults completed since our soft-launch, we have witnessed a strong demand for our services. Given that many medical issues can be handled via telehealth, Celes aims to provide instant, affordable and accessible healthcare with the best clinical practices.” added Celes Care co-founder and Medical Director, Dr. Rajah Koppala.

Speaking about the future of digital medicine, Dr. Steven Steinhubl, Director of Digital Medicine at STSI said, “The convergence of genomics, digital devices and precision medicine is going to transform the future of healthcare delivery around the globe. We’ve already seen the proliferation of wristband activity trackers and blood pressure cuffs that sync with your smartphone, which, as great as they are, don’t cause change, but rather only enable change to occur. But the next few years will see more advanced efforts to use technology to deliver the right health care services to the right people when and where they want to receive them.”
“Digital Health will radically change healthcare in the next 10 years in India by improving access to care and patient outcomes at less than half the cost. We are very bullish about the sector. We are honored to have the guru of Digital Health and Genomics, Dr. Steven Steinhubl, join the board of Celes because of his strong belief in telehealth for India”, said Venkatadri Bobba, Partner at Ventureast.

"India should leverage telehealth solutions to solve the health problems of its billion people. Virtual visits can avoid unnecessary travel and loss of productivity. With increasing availability of smart phones and connectivity, this is the ideal time even for the government to push Telehealth solutions and allow e-prescriptions." said Dr. Ramesh Byrapanani, Cardiologist & entrepreneur turned Venture Capitalist at Endiya Partners.

Dr. Prem Pavoor, Partner at Eight Roads Ventures added, “The women’s health segment in India presents a large unmet need for innovative models addressing access to and delivery of high quality care. We are excited to partner with Raghu and Dr. Rajah as they use technology to bridge the gap between healthcare providers and these consumers.”

Now, LoveDoctor is shifting to serving only women, a move the SHEROES team hopes will create a safer space where women feel free to discuss taboo subjects that can cause them to be the subject of gossip, retaliation, or even threats.

Women have questions about love, relationships and sex too and we should not feel shy, scared, or fear retaliation if they ask. No one should feel alone.”

The new forum allows users to log in and post questions, and get answers from LoveDoctor experts and peers. Women will be able to log on the forum using their Facebook login details, and begin posting and supporting other women immediately.  There is also an option to post on the forum anonymously.

Tinder: A new survey by Tinder refutes the common adage of men are from Mars and women are from Venus

It’s a Match: Men and Women swipe right for similar traits, finds Tinder

Tinder: A new survey by Tinder refutes the common adage of men are from Mars and women are from Venus

Mumbai, India – 12 February, 2017: A new survey by Tinder refutes the common adage of men are from Mars and women are from Venus. The in-app survey, which saw more than 15000 respondents participating, found startling similarities in likes and dislikes of both men and women users on the app.

The survey sought to discover preferred traits and behaviours that users Swipe Right for when using the app. A very similar percentage of men and women value humour and men share two of the top three characteristics: shares values/interests and humour.

The top non-negotiable desired qualities among women are sense of humour (24.5%), shares values and interests (24%) and intelligence/well-read (22.9%). The top non-negotiable desired qualities among men are good looks (30.6%), sense of humour (25.2%), shares values and interests (24.1%). The only significant difference was that women preferred intellect over appearance as compared to men.

We’re often asked about how men and women differ in their behaviour and preferences in online dating, but we’ve found that men and women value the same characteristics in a partner, largely. Both men and women are seeking partners who are worldly and open-minded. This is a heartening revelation for our users who are seeking to forge meaningful connections as you know that there are others who share your values and interests,” said Taru Head of Tinder in India.

Tinder set-up its office in India in January 2016, and records average daily swipes of 14 million swipes per day. Interestingly, Tinder also found that activity on the app leading up to and during Valentine’s Day in 2016 increased by nearly 20%.
