SUSE Steps Up to Support Innovative ARM Solutions for Customers

SUSE providing first commercial enterprise Linux distribution optimized for ARM-based 64-bit servers

NEW DELHI / BENGALURU, India – October 28, 2016 – SUSE®, today unveiled SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for ARM, the first commercial enterprise Linux distribution optimized for servers based on the 64-bit ARM®v8-A architecture. SUSE’s fully supported enterprise Linux will allow hardware and software providers to create and provide innovative ARM-based solutions more quickly for enterprise IT customers. In 2015, SUSE announced collaboration with partners to bring SUSE Enterprise Storage to devices powered by 64-bit ARM technology. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for ARM is a major step toward delivery of ARM support for software-defined storage systems and other solutions.

SUSE Steps Up to Support Innovative ARM Solutions for Customers

“SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for ARM will give customers more choice, flexibility and opportunities to cost effectively upgrade their business processes,” said Ralf Flaxa, SUSE President of Engineering. “It does that by giving our hardware and software partners an established, rock-solid open source foundation on which to build efficient ARM-based infrastructure solutions. And they will be able to do it faster than ever before.”

Lakshmi Mandyam, Senior Marketing Director of Server Program at ARM, said, “The ARM server market enables innovation and choice for solution providers across a variety of workloads. SUSE has responded to customers demanding workload-optimized server platforms that can radically expand what is possible in modern data centers. The commitment from SUSE to support specific ARMv8-A features, coupled with their enterprise-class product support, will accelerate time to deployment for the entire ARM server ecosystem.”

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for ARM will bring the same benefits and interaction to the ARM ecosystem that SUSE partners providing x86-64, Power and z Systems solutions already experience. Highlights include:
o Advanced tools to more quickly compile, package, and deploy Linux solutions for systems based on the ARMv8-A architecture
o Storage optimization leveraging ARM System-on-Chip features
o A foundation for network integration and support for encryption and compression engines or custom FPGA features
o Enhanced security for commercial workloads sharing certified development processes with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 for x86-64 which provides the highest security level for commercial operating systems via Common Criteria EAL4+ support

Initial solutions being developed by SUSE partners include large-scale storage, high performance computing and networking systems.

“Cavium and SUSE have worked closely in validating full support for the ThunderX® Workload Optimized server processor family with this release of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server,” said Larry Wikelius, Vice President of the Software Ecosystem and Solutions Group at Cavium, Inc. “SUSE has a distinguished track record of leadership in Linux, and this release ensures a rich feature set and application optimization for systems leveraging Cavium’s 48-core, high performance, high memory bandwidth processors along with industry-leading customer support. This combination is ideal for accelerating the delivery of innovative solutions in the large system server, telco and storage markets that Cavium serves.”

Al Gillen, IDC Group Vice President of Software Development and Open Source, said, “ARM processor technology is gaining traction as an alternative to x86 server-class processors, not only for servers and IoT devices, but also for system categories like storage, networking and high performance computing. The release of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for ARM and its support for multiple ARM technology partners establishes a solid foundation for open innovation and growth of a diverse ecosystem of solutions.”

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for ARM will be available by the end of the year, as will 64-bit ARM support for SUSE Enterprise Storage. Solution provider partners will be able to choose from a menu of standard SUSE Premium Support options to support their own product development, test, and customer support. LuLu Group Leans on SUSE for High Availability and Lower Costs, Improving Response to Opportunities and Threats

With 124 retail outlets and 700,000 daily shoppers, LuLu Group migrated from UNIX to SUSE Linux as platform for SAP solutions, reducing SAP landscape operating costs at least 20 percent

BENGALURU, India – August 29, 2016 – LuLu Group International, a retailer with 124 outlets and operations in 31 countries, has migrated to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications to help its business managers faster identify and respond to new opportunities and competitive threats.

Since starting its retail journey in the early 1990s, LuLu Group has grown its retail activities aggressively. Headquartered in the United Arab Emirates, the company enjoys a 32 percent market share in its territories and welcomes more than 700,000 shoppers daily. As LuLu Group drove its rapid growth, the pressure to keep business systems working optimally also rose, leading the company to migrate its SAP for Retail landscape from Solaris to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications. When LuLu Group wanted to improve the speed of business reporting and analytics by deploying the SAP HANA database, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications was again its platform of choice, combining high availability and performance with low total cost of ownership.

“We decided to deploy SAP HANA both for business intelligence and as the operational database for our complete SAP landscape,” said Madhav Rao, CIO of LuLu Group. “Given our experience of the availability, flexibility, scalability and ease of management of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications, this was the logical platform on which to deploy our new SAP HANA software.”

Shiju Shanmughan, Network and Infrastructure Manager at LuLu Group, said, “We knew that the relationship between  SAP and SUSE® is very close, and that SAP uses the SUSE operating system for its own development on Linux, so it seemed to be the best option. The deployment went very smoothly, and we handled it largely with our in-house team, using the excellent SUSE documentation. Thanks to this complete, end-to-end workflow for the installation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications, our team was able to save valuable time throughout the implementation process – helping to ensure that we went live on time. We also support the OS in-house, escalating any more-complex queries to the experts on the SUSE support team.”

Taking advantage of the bundled SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension solution has enabled LuLu Group to ensure extremely high availability for its SAP landscape in the two years since initial deployment. The company also uses a special kernel-tune option to improve SAP performance; this protects less-used memory from being paged out and used by the Linux file system, keeping it available for SAP applications.

With both its core SAP ERP landscape and its new SAP HANA landscape running on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications, LuLu Group enjoys optimal performance, easy management, seamless scalability and low cost of ownership. As LuLu Group continues its expansion, the added speed of analysis provided by SAP HANA in-memory technology will help the company’s business managers to identify new opportunities and competitive threats faster, and determine the optimal response.

“Our initial migration from Solaris to the SUSE Linux Enterprise platform reduced our total operational costs for the SAP landscape by at least 20 percent,” Rao said. “However, the increases in performance and availability are more important to the business because these help us to ensure excellent customer service at all times. We trust SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to provide extreme stability for our mission-critical SAP ERP and SAP HANA landscapes.”
