Patient from Oman sheds weight in Bengaluru after undergoing Sleeve Gastrectomy Robotic Surgery

India 13 December 2016:

Patient from Oman sheds weight in Bengaluru after undergoing Sleeve Gastrectomy Robotic Surgery

Bengaluru: Musallam Salim Ali Ghawas aged 64 hailing from Salalah in Oman weighed 120 Kilos. He was suffering from morbid obesity with sleep apnea and diabetes. An engineer by profession, Musallam was determined to lose weight and manage his diabetes without any complications and his determination brought him to Dr. Ashwini Kumar Kudari, Head and Senior Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist and Robotic Surgeon at Narayana Health City, Bengaluru. Prior to that he was planning to go to UK for treatment and a friend advised him to visit Narayana Health City.

So Musallam landed in Bengaluru and his treatment plan was coordinated by a team of International Patient Care executives at Narayana Health City. He went through a detailed evaluation by a multidisciplinary team of doctors and they decided that Sleeve Gastrectomy would be the best treatment option for him. A patient who is fit for General Anesthesia Surgery is considered fit to undergo a Robotic Surgery. “Sleeve Gastrectomy is a one-time procedure that involves the removal of part of the stomach, thus eliminating hunger stimulating hormones resulting in decreased appetite”, informed Dr. Ashwini Kumar.

Bariatric Robotic surgery comes as a boon to patients suffering from life-threatening obesity and living with diabetes. The surgery promises to reduce accumulated fat with a weight reduction of almost 70 to 100 kilos and even helps diabetics go off insulin!

Dr. Ashwini Kumar believes that Sleeve Gastrectomy is a life-saving surgery, which shouldn’t be mistaken for a cosmetic surgery. “The surgery removes two-thirds of the stomach, which provides for quicker satiety (sense of fullness) and decreased appetite. The smaller stomach pouch restricts food intake by allowing only a small amount of food to be eaten at one time”, explained Dr. Ashwini. He also said that “A robotic bariatric surgery is very safe and beneficial for those concerned about an open bypass surgery. In fact this procedure does not involve any bypass of the intestinal tract and therefore patients do not suffer the complications of intestinal bypass”.

"My weight was 120 kg before the surgery. After the surgery, I feel much better as many of the other problems I used to face due to obesity are no more. My blood pressure is normal and the joint pain does not bother me anymore; my diabetes is also under control and sleeping problem is solved” said a much relieved Musallam.
The recovery time is much faster due to minimal invasive technique used in Robotic surgery and there is less blood loss during surgery. The duration of hospital stay is also reduced and the healing is faster.

The weight-loss surgery program at Narayana Health City is staffed by surgeons who are recognized leaders in their fields and provide patients with 24-hour, seven-day-a-week coverage. They also provide detailed, quality information on all procedures performed.

Dr. Ashwini Kumar and his team provide an innovative, comprehensive and compassionate care experience for patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Dr. Ashwini represents a combination of training, expertise and recognition providing the highest quality Robotic bariatric surgical care, and performs gastric sleeve, gastric banding, and gastric bypass surgeries.

Narayana Health launches the next chapter of 'Project Udaan' in Tumkur district with support from CISCO and Siddhaganga Mutt

Tumkur, Sunday, 21st November 2016: Narayana Health’s social initiative with a focus on educating and mentoring selected students from economically challenged family backgrounds to become doctors is the brainchild of Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman – Narayana Health. Narayana Hrudayalaya Foundation has joined hands with Sree Siddaganga Mutt and CISCO to implement the next chapter of Udaan program in Tumkur district. InnoTeach Learning Solutions are the education partners in this initiative.

Project Udaan was launched in Karnataka two years back in December 2014. After launching a successful program in Kanakpura with support from MindTree and Jain University, the Tumkur chapter was launched today at Siddaganga Mutt with support from CISCO. The program was launched by His Holiness Dr. Shree Shree Sivakumara Swamigalu of Siddaganga Mutt in Tumkur amidst a large gathering of teachers, including teachers from Innoteach learning agency, students and project Udaan teams from Narayana Health’s CSR wing and CISCO.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Anupama Shetty, Sr. Program Manager – CSR, Narayana Health said, “Since Udaan program seeks to reach out to rural deserving students, it was felt that students from Siddanganga Mutt are eminently suited to be a part of this program. The Mutt’s objective of inclusiveness and empowerment of rural students is in alignment with the spirit of Udaan program”.
Project Udaan is modeled on the lines of ‘Udayer Pathey’ (meaning towards the path of dawn, in Bengali) – a social initiative of Narayana Health that was started in the year 2007 in West Bengal. It offers scholarships to bright students from disadvantaged rural backgrounds to become doctors. It follows a streamlined selection process to ensure that deserving and bright students who aspire to make a career in medicine are given the required support and resources to achieve their dreams.
Speaking about the difference it makes in the quality of life for children from rural background,   Mr. Shyam Kaluve, Director Engineering CISCO said, “This program aims to fill the large gap in skilled doctors and medical professionals especially in the rural areas. Rural children selected for this program shall receive constant guidance and coaching from the early age to propel them higher academically. With their strong bond to their home, village, and community we hope they shall support the rural areas in future.”

The objective is to ensure online as well as direct mentoring and coaching of students. For ease of implementation and monitoring, six schools in the vicinity of Siddaganga Mutt were chosen. The schools are Sree Siddalingeshwara Residential High School, S. R. Secondary School, Siddhaganga P.U. School, Silver Jubilee M.D. High School, Sree Basaveshwara English Medium High School and Nivedita High School. The selection process is divided in five stages namely, written exam, interaction with doctors, interest and awareness towards life science, counseling of parents and family background verification. Post verification of family background, 50 deserving students are selected for further educational support. House-hold visits are carried out to ensure that socio-economic criteria are met and parents are supportive of the program.

“The program follows a selection methodology to ensure we are reaching out to the brightest and most deserving students who have an aptitude towards taking up science as a subject after class 10, and are committed towards choosing the medical profession as their career”, said Dr. Anupama.
Children from Udaan program can be motivated to use their medical education in improving health care systems in their villages and small towns. The student also becomes a role model in the community inspiring others to pursue this path. In other words, the multiplier effect on the society of enabling a talented child to become a doctor is huge. Every single doctor created of the Udaan program has a ripple effect throughout the community.

Narayana Health Collaborates with Cisco To Offer Specialized Remote Diagnostics Capabilities

Narayana Healthcare to offer Neurology, Nephrology, Oncology and Cardiac specialists over Cisco Virtual Expertise Digital Solution

Bengaluru, Wednesday, September 07, 2016: Narayana Health, a multispeciality tertiary level healthcare service provider in India today announced their alliance with Cisco to help deliver affordable specialty healthcare services remotely using Cisco’s Virtual Expertise Digital Solution. Based on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Narayana Health (NH) and Cisco, the highly secure medical-grade network with an enhanced visual experience / high-definition two-way video was launched in the presence of Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Health and Mr. VC Gopalratnam, CIO, APJC, President, IT and Chief of Strategy, Planning and Operations, Cisco India. The association will enable NH to offer diagnostic services for various specialities at a cost that’s affordable with a high-quality, high-value patient experience in the areas of Neurology (Brain & Nervous System), Nephrology (Kidney & Renal Disease), Oncology (all types of Cancers) and Cardiology (heart related ailments) to patients remotely in various parts of the country.

Cisco will also implement modifications to hospital infrastructure enabling healthcare delivery at district centers and multi-specialty hospitals of Narayana Health Group across the country, creating a truly mobile and digital hospital experience. Narayana Health will work together with Cisco to integrate and set up advanced telemedicine solutions across 3 centres in India – Sirsi and Bellary in Karnataka and Rajarhat in Bengal via the main centre at Narayana Health City located in Bommasandra, Bangalore, Karnataka.

Healthcare providers face many challenges in the delivery of healthcare services. The doctor–patient ratio in India is 1:1,674 against the World Health Organization (WHO) norm of 1:1,000. Nearly 70% of India's population lives in rural areas, but 80% of the total available doctors live in urban areas and patients often have to travel long distances at great cost to get quality healthcare. This gap poses a huge challenge for the delivery of healthcare to rural areas. The lack of overall healthcare infrastructure offering specialised diagnostics is another major concern.

According to International Agency for Research (IARC), a World Health Organization entity in 2014, India had 1,000 trained oncologists in the country and the ratio of oncologists to cancer patients was about 1:2,000; 40,000 cardiologists against a patient population of 45 million - a doctor-patient ratio of 1:1,125; and 1,500 nephrologists in the country - a doctor-patient ratio of about 1:8,000.

The Cisco Virtual Expertise Digital solution will help connect patients with NH specialists conveniently and efficiently, regardless of distance. The solution brings voice, video and data to wherever patients are located and demonstrates how tele-health and sensors within medical devices can create new opportunities for innovation. The solution enables real time telemetry of medical device data, audio, high-definition two way video, ECG, other vitals and radiology, analytics of medical reports and a web-based portal which supports mobile end points. A detailed 'clinical examination' and review of all investigations are now possible in a seamless manner with the option of recording the entire interaction This solution will allow doctors from NH to conduct highly critical diagnostics such as Diacom viewing and detection of Thrombolysis in cardiac care. The collaboration will help NH empower care teams so they can help provide more proactive and predictive care for their patients.

The Cisco Virtual Expertise Digital solution is encrypted to provide NH a highly secure platform for the safety and privacy of the patient record system to ensure the data is available when needed and that information is not used, disclosed, accessed, altered, or deleted inappropriately while being stored or transmitted while using this solution.

Increasingly there is a shift in consumer attitudes toward remote consultation, sharing of personal data, telemedicine and access to medical information in the healthcare industry. As per a Cisco Customer Experience Report focused on health carestudy in 2013, 74% of consumers are open to a virtual doctor visit. The results of the report demonstrate that as information, technology, bandwidth, and integration of the network become the center of the "new world," both human and digital aspects are key parts to the overall patient experience. These components lead to more real-time, meaningful patient and doctor interactions. The report findings highlight that while consumers still depend heavily on in person medical treatments, given a choice between virtual access to care and human contact, three quarters of patients and citizens would choose access to care and are comfortable with the use of technology for the clinician interaction.

“Healthcare and its inaccessibility is a persistent concern in India. We are in an era of digital transformation, and as hospitals begin this transition, we need to create infrastructure that is agile and adds value to patient care,” said Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Health. “Our association with Cisco will help Narayana Health to move closer to realize its vision of becoming a digital hospital and deliver advanced specialized healthcare to both rural as well as urban populations.  We are looking forward to further deepening and leveraging this relationship in future”, he added.

Speaking on the occasion VC Gopalratnam, CIO, APJC, President, IT and Chief of Strategy, Planning and Operations, Cisco India, said, “Narayana Health has redefined how super-specialty healthcare is delivered. Using highly secure medical-grade networks with immersive visual experiences we can virtualize scarce resources including doctors, nurses and paramedics and provide access to specialist consultants remotely. We are excited that our collaboration with Narayana Health demonstrates the future of health and healthcare in India.”

Speaking on the occasion, Debashish Sen, IAS, Chairman, West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) said, “Rajarhat New Town is using ICT as a strategic differentiator at the foundation of its expansive community. We set out from the beginning to create a community that be a stage for the best thinking in terms of design, construction and livability. We will leverage technology to create an enhanced quality of local living – be it delivery of specialized healthcare or other citizen services, which will facilitate a higher quality of life for the residents. We look forward to the Cisco - NH initiative to provide remote specialized healthcare and revolutionize the delivery of health care in India.
