"Ministry of Health & Prevention" launches awareness campaign on mental health in conjunction with the World Mental Health Day

In the framework of applying the national strategy for mental health and under the slogan "Live Life"



UAE, 5 October, 2016 - The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) plans to launch an awareness campaign to promote awareness of mental health and mental disorders ranging from 10 to 17 October under the slogan "Live Life" in conjunction with the World Mental Health Day by organizing a launching ceremony in the MOHAP on October 10, 2016.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of mental disorders, specifically anxiety and depression, which are more common disorders, according to research, as well as clarify the vision and objectives of the MOHAP National Mental Health Programme and what has been achieved up to the present time as well as to clarify the projects and future plans. 

The awareness campaign will include awareness lectures and distribution of booklets about depression and anxiety and conducting a screening for anxiety and depression in Primary Health Care centers, shopping malls and universities. Moreover, awareness programs will be conducted by MOHAP mental health professionals in local radio and television channels and MOHAP social media platforms. 

Dr. Hussein Abdel-Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary of the MOHAP’s Health Centers and Clinics Sector stated that the vision of the MOHAP National Mental Health program is the provision of quality mental health services that are cost-effective and accessible to all people. The strategic objectives include promoting mental health awareness, changing community negative perceptions toward mental health problems and promoting screening and early detection of mental disorders, and development of a national statistical database on mental health disorders. He emphasized that integrating mental health services into the Primary Health Care is a priority. 

Dr. Youssif Al Serkal Assistant Undersecretary of the MOHAP’s Hospital Sector added that the MOHAP National Mental Health Program aims to provide quality health services for all age groups and develop Community Mental Health services for those with chronic mental illness to reduce the impact of mental disorders on individuals, families and the community and help integrating them into the society, in addition to support scientific research in the field of mental health.

Al Baraha Hospital celebrates World Breastfeeding Week


UAE, 8 August 2016 - The Ministry of Health and Prevention’s (MOHAP) Al Baraha Hospital successfully concluded the celebrations for World Breastfeeding Week 2016 under the slogan “Natural breastfeeding is the key for sustainable development,” and falls in line with the efforts to promote the importance of natural breastfeeding, and encourage mothers to continue to practice.

Al Baraha Hospital, which concluded its celebrations for the World Breastfeeding Week yesterday (August 7, 2016), is considered one of the leading institutions  applying  specific standards in line with the ten steps for successful natural breastfeeding, which reflects positively on the baby’s health, and reflects the hospital’s commitment to provide the best healthcare and implementing policies, procedures and other related systems following the standards of the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

Ahmed Obaid Al Khadeim, Hospital Manager, facilitated the opening ceremony for the celebrations. He confirmed that the events aim to increase the awareness of pregnancies and instill upon the mother the importance of natural breastfeeding, and its role of providing natural protection for the baby’s health. The activities included the participation of various sectors in the hospital, where educational breastfeeding leaflets have been distributed.


Al Khadeim noted that AL Baraha hospital is an approved ‘baby friendly’ hospital, where it is committed to comply with ministerial directions, and instructions of the World Health Organization and UNICEF to ensure the utmost safety and security of mothers and their children. This is being through the implementation of natural breastfeeding programs in specialized clinics, hospital and medical centers.

Ministry of Health & Prevention launches awareness campaign focusing on health & safety for Hajj pilgrims 

UAE, August 1, 2016 – With the aim to ensure the safety and health of Hajj pilgrims, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP), in cooperation with the Health Authority-Abu Dhabi (HAAD) and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), has launched a large-scale campaign.

The awareness campaign focuses on the well-being of pilgrims, especially the elderly healthy individuals and patients regardless their age who could suffer from chronic illnesses and cardiovascular diseases, as they are more prone to develop health-related problems especially those related to overcrowding. The campaign also includes medical advices: on heat exhaustion, awareness about healthy foods, personal care, provision of emergency medicine, and availability of essential vaccinations against: meningitis, pneumococcal, and seasonal influenza, …ect. 

As part of the campaign, a joint team has also been established in coordination with available medical entities. It is operated by different healthcare professionals, including department managers, doctors, physicians, nursing staff, and technical professionals in preventive medicine, immunization, and mass gathering medicine. The Ministry stated that the recommended vaccines are currently available thus, all pilgrims are urged to get their recommended vaccines.


During the press conference which was held today August 1, 2016 in Dubai, where representatives from HAAD and DHA. Dr. Fatma Al Attar, Director, International Health Regulations Office, Ministry of Health and Prevention who emphasized on the importance and significant value of the unified actions taken by all related entities to ensure health and safety for all pilgrims. Dr. Fatma Al Attar also added that the campaign comes in line with the Ministry’s strategic objective as it caters for development of preventive healthcare system in the UAE in order, to ensure full protection and control of infectious diseases. In addition, she highlighted the importance of getting the right medical advice before going to pilgrims, and emphasized on all primary healthcare physicians are ready and available to respond to any inquiry by the convenient medical advice in order, to avoid all related health problems, such as: heat exhaustion and physical stress which can increase the chances of developing certain diseases while performing Hajj rituals. Moreover, Dr. Fatma pointed out that it is mandatory to stick to healthy diet and to the Ministry of Health guidelines which has been incorporated from all health-related entities in term of educational booklet for people with chronic conditions like diabetics and patients with heart diseases to avoid getting ill.


Dr. Laila Al Jasmi, Head of Vaccination Department, at Ministry of Health and Prevention, mainly focused on the importance of vaccines as an effective precautionary measure. Therefore, for this reason it is mandatory to opt for meningitis vaccine and to obtain a valid International Certificate of Vaccination and it is recommended to take vaccine 15 days prior to your travelling date to ensure it is effectiveness. 

Dr Farida Al Hosani, Director of the Communicable Diseases Department at HAAD, said: "catering for the safety of pilgrims and protecting their health from most common infectious diseases, considered one of the top public health priorities for Abu Dhabi Health Authority. Therefore, she also stressed for pilgrims on the importance of getting the recommended vaccinations’ shots due to potential high risk of infectious diseases that might be encountered by them and also can reduce the potential risk of developing these diseases among vulnerable groups like above 65 years old and those suffering from chronic diseases such as: Diabetics, chronic renal or pulmonary diseases, organ transplantation or bone marrow transplantation and leukemia. Furthermore, Meningococcal vaccine is specifically recommended by Saudi Ministry of Health as a prerequisite for all pilgrims before entering the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.” 

Dr. Nahed Alyousef, Director of Preventive Medicine Division, DHA, said: “we strongly advice anyone planning to go for Hajj to undertake the necessary preventive actions which would help them to perform their rituals without medical problems.” Therefore, as part of the most important recommended prevention methods against potential infectious diseases pilgrims should take the required vaccines at least 15 days before their travelling date. She also explained the consequences of not getting the recommended vaccines before travelling to Hajj as there is a great potential risk for disease outbreak during Hajj season and that may even lead to other outbreaks due to transmission of that disease to pilgrims’ countries which also escalates the hazard for global health. 

The press conference also mentioned the importance of taking optional vaccines against other infectious diseases to guarantee the full physical fitness during Hajj. The recommended important optional vaccines may include both seasonal influenza and pneumococcal vaccines especially for the most vulnerable groups, such as elderly or patients with anemia, sickle-cell anemia, HIV, and chronic diseases. 

At the end of the press conference, the Ministry of Health and Prevention, UAE and all concerned health authorities strongly advised every pilgrim to consult with the nearest primary healthcare physician to his place of residence in order, to be quite sure of his/ her medical fitness to travel and do pilgrim’s rituals. In addition, to do the following: get the required vaccinations, stick to healthy diet and be vigilant about food hygiene to avoid any related stomach disorders, and not to ignore visiting the medical doctor whenever developing any symptom or sign. 

In conclusion, pilgrims requested to adhere to the following key health recommendations: 

·         Take rest when feeling travel sickness, dizziness and nausea.

·         Avoid direct exposure to the sunlight, especially at midday hours by using an umbrella as head protection and humidifying the body with water.

·         Drink plenty of liquids to remain hydrated especially while moving.

·         Patients with chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes are advised to take related medicines along with self-examination devices to monitor blood pressure and blood sugar level.

·         Elderly patients with any chronic disease that requires specific attention are advised to travel with a companionship who will be experienced in handling related medical emergency to that chronic illness. 

·         Make sure to carry medicines related to most common complains like Paracetamol (Panadol) for headache and body aches, antiseptics for wounds or skin lesions and ointments for burns.

·         Upon feeling of fatigability or severe stress immediately discontinue any activity and if the feeling persisted, then you must visit the nearest healthcare center.

·         Never forget your personal hygiene stuffs such as: soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, sewak and comb.

Ministry of Health and Prevention highlights importance of drinking water in ‘Water Week’ campaign



Initiative aims to instill a positive habit of choosing healthier drinks and lead a healthy lifestyle

UAE, July 31, 2016 -
The Health Education and Promotion Department at the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has recently launched ‘Water Week’ activities at the Ministry’s headquarters in Dubai to raise awareness on the importance of drinking water. The event seeks to instill healthy habits among MOHAP staff and raise further awareness in line with MOHAP’s strategy to create a supportive work environment that encourages employees to develop positive water drinking habits. This will help enhance the over-all health of the employees, which in turn will help them be more effective in their tasks and increase
Water bottles will be distributed daily on all MOHAP staff throughout the week in partnership with New Romana General Trading LLC to highlight the benefits of drinking water, at least 8 to 10 glasses every day, instead of consuming other sugary drinks. Water bottles will be delivered along with campaign messages with guiding tips per day. This will be accompanied by an email directed to the employee, which includes additional information about the importance of drinking water and following some methods or tricks that promote the habit of drinking water in the recommended amount, such as adding their favorite flavors to the water by including sliced ​​vegetables or fruits. In addition, the employees are advised to carry a bottle of water everywhere they go especially during the summer and to use numbered water bottles to track their water consumption. 

Dr. Fadila Mohammed Sharif, Director, Health Education and Promotion Department, said that the ‘Water Week’ event was held as part of the Ministry’s strategy to promote healthy lifestyles in the communities of the UAE and reduce the prevalence of diseases associated with lifestyle choices. It also aims to encourage employees to raise awareness in adopting healthier drinking options, particularly drinking adequate quantities of water especially during the summer when the temperature and humidity is at its highest.

Dr. Fadila mentioned that water is the most important component to ensure the continuity of the work functions of our body, every part of our body needs water to work properly, as the human body contains a proportion of 55-75% of the water. She added that the body needs water in all its vital processes such as digestion, absorption and transport of nutrients, building of tissues and maintaining body temperature, as well as kidneys performance.

MOHAP signs a MoU with Sanofi aimed at ensuring higher diabetes awareness and care for patients in the UAE


·         The program is being launched in alignment with UAE’s commitment to the 10-year executive plan by the Gulf Cooperation Council and Health Ministers of Gulf Community signed in 2008 to fight diabetes and with a mission to promote health awareness in the Gulf

·         The partnership will involve accredited training programs for healthcare professionals to elevate the standard of care in diabetes and educational programs for patients and society to improve disease awareness

UAE, 5 June 2016: The Ministry of Health and Prevention has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to improve diabetes awareness and care for patients in the UAE with the Sanofi. The announcement is an initiative aimed at improving physicians and nurses’ capabilities in providing standardized treatment for diabetes patients, and enhancing prevention and awareness among healthy individuals in society for improved Type 2 diabetes management.

In line with the UAE’s commitment to the 10-year plan by the Gulf Cooperation Council, the signing of the MoU was announced during a press conference held at Hyatt Regency Creek Heights in Dubai, in the presence of His Excellency Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for Health Centers and Clinics, Chairman of the National Diabetes Committee, and Jean-Paul Scheuer, Country Chair and General Manager for Sanofi Gulf. The press conference also saw the participation of members of the National Diabetes Committee, representatives of health authorities, hospitals, and medical centers, in addition to diabetes experts in the country.

Dr. Al Rand highlighted that, through this MoU, the Ministry aims to achieve the highest level of awareness on diabetes and its complications in the country. The effort is to equip the general public with the necessary knowledge to manage and prevent the disease. The Ministry also aims at imparting advanced training to healthcare professionals as part of its initiative to combat non-communicable diseases, along with community awareness programs to achieve their strategic goals of enhancing healthy lifestyles within the country and limit lifestyle related diseases.

His Excellency also indicated that the Ministry is conducting many national surveys and research programs to evaluate the incidence of diabetes and risk factors associated with it. One such program is in progress by the Ministry of Health & Prevention in collaboration with the University of Sharjah, Dubai Health Authority and the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi under the scientific supervision of Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute. He also highlighted the importance of establishing surveillance systems and national patient records, in order create up-to-date databases that can contribute to drawing strategic plans, and monitor the progress achieved in combating diabetes through measurable indicators.

“At Sanofi, we are pleased to be part of this joint partnership with the Ministry of Health and Prevention & National Diabetes Committee towards furthering our commitment to improving patient lives and contributing to the growth of healthy societies. Our aim is to empower healthcare professionals, patients and communities using innovative programs, and through research and development to help people effectively combat diabetes in UAE,” said Jean-Paul Scheuer, Country Chair and General Manager for Sanofi Gulf.

The ‘Quality Improvement of Health Services’ activities will provide accredited training programs on standardized diabetes treatment for healthcare professionals including, physicians and nurses to help them ensure improved health outcomes for diabetes patients.

The “Empowerment of Diabetic Patients” will see educational workshops being conducted for diabetes patients and their families involving sessions and lectures by specialized experts along with interactive material developed especially to elevate patient understanding of the Diabetes. Further, there will be educational sessions conducted for children, school students and their families and teachers. They will receive interactive training materials aimed at promoting the benefits of healthy diet and physical activities, while fostering a safe and supportive school environment for children with diabetes to help care for them.

The meeting was held in the presence of MOHAP’s senior officials H.E. Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Policy and Licensing; H.E. Dr. Youssif Al Serkal, Assistant Undersecretary for the Hospitals Sector and H.E. Dr. Nasser Khalifa Al Budoor, Assistant Undersecretary and Director of the Minister Office, while senior delegates from Pfizer included Mr. Menassie Tadesse, Regional Lead, Africa and Middle East – Global Innovative Pharmaceuticals; Dr. Zeydan Abuissa, General Manager, Pfizer Gulf & Levant; Dr. Nadia Younis, Director, Public Affairs and Communication and Dr. Mohammed Fawzi, Cluster Lead Innovative Medicines Pharma.

 During the meeting, H.E. Al Owais underscored the existing strategic partnership between MOHAP and Pfizer and the Ministry’s keenness to develop regulations and legislations, which will allow global pharmaceutical firms to take advantage of the country’s positive environment for investments and create a highly specialized sector focused on biopharmaceuticals and innovative medicines in partnership with the local pharmaceutical industry. H.E. Al Owais also cited the Ministry’s initiative to develop an electronic systems for medicines’ registration and control for import, supply and prescribing channels, additionally to lead awareness campaigns to reinforce the fight against counterfeit drugs & medicines abuse.

The UAE is leading the region in terms of approving innovative medicines, which is in line with the Ministry's goal to provide quality healthcare services in the UAE and in accordance with the international standards, H.E. Al Owais added.

Pfizer’s Ms. Cocero reiterated Pfizer’s commitment to finding sustainable solutions to the most pressing health care challenges. She also commended the UAE’s health policies to advance healthcare and serve patients better. Cocero noted that Pfizer will continue applying science and resources to improve health and well-being at every stage of life. She commented that collaboration will bring the best results and Pfizer is delighted to take part in the government’s efforts to ensure patients have access to innovative medicines while protecting the communities in which we work and live." Ms. Cocero also pointed out that the UAE is one of the very first countries in the world to register Pfizer innovative medicines upon adoption of the U.S Food and Drug Administration FDA.

Dr. Amin Al Amiri mentioned the mutual interest to organize an international conference on combatting counterfeit medicines in collaboration with Pfizer Global Inc. at the beginning of 2017 with an estimated attendance of more than 1,500 participants from across the region, building on the success of the 1st regional conference held in 2009. The conference will support the ministry's efforts to combat counterfeit medicines and will help in raising awareness among the UAE’s Community regarding counterfeit medicines and abuse. The conference will discuss best strategies for medication monitoring & supply chain integrity and will facilitate exchanging information and expertise among stakeholders in order to enhance the collaboration channels to ensure best outcomes. Worth to mention that counterfeit medicines is a global issue of fake medicines with an estimated market of $100 billion annually.

H.E. also assured the Ministry’s commitment to building a world-class regulatory frameworks, infrastructure and systems to encourage global pharmaceutical companies, research centers, and industry stakeholders to launch innovative projects in the UAE as well as to produce new pharmaceutical products in collaboration with local companies to ensure the availability of high-quality and affordable medicines in UAE. This will provide patients in UAE, especially those suffering from chronic diseases, the access to innovative and cost-effective medicines.

To date, about 8,100 different drug classes have been made highly affordable as a result of various government initiatives and support from global pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer.

UAE, May 26, 2016 - The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has revealed details regarding the “Visiting Doctors Program,” set to be launched in June 2016. The initiative will provide patients with advisory, diagnostic and therapeutic services in the field of orthopedic surgery, interventional cardiology and neurosurgery. The program features the participation of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Hospital in Ajman, and Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah and Fujairah Hospital.

Dr. Francois Ehkirch consultant orthopedic surgery (knee sports injuries) will be the visiting doctor at Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Hospital from May 29 to June 2, 2016; Dr. Branko Beleslin consultant interventional cardiac disease will be the visiting doctor for Al Qasimi Hospital from June 19 to 23, 2016; and Dr. Andrew Davidson, a consultant neurosurgeon, will be assigned to Fujairah Hospital from June 19 to 23, 2016.



The Ministry remains committed towards integrating internationals medical standards within its program to provide quality health services to citizens and expatriates alike. This initiative also plays an active role in enhancing the medical training of doctors and technical personnel across the emirates as part of the national efforts to upgrade medical competencies, and ensure that patients will not have to travel abroad to receive treatment for their respective diseases.
