Jumpthegap: Roca´s international design contest presents its 7th edition


·         The new edition of the competition features interesting novelties coinciding with the centenary of Roca in 2017

New Delhi, 7th November 2016.- The seventh edition of Roca´s international design contest, jumpthegap has been launched. Premiered last week at an event held during the Dubai Design Week 2016, the contest for young architects traverses the growth path of the architecture industry around the globe by encouraging the potential talent in this field.  Being promoted for the first time in India, this year’s edition is very special as it coincides with Roca's 100th Anniversary celebration (1917-2017).

Jumpthegap: Roca´s international design contest presents its 7th edition


This competition, promoted by Roca in collaboration with the BCD Barcelona Design Centre offers an international platform where architecture and design professionals and students from around the world may display their innovative proposals for the bathroom space.

Speaking at this initiative by the company, Mr. Pau Abello, Pellicer, MD, Roca Bathrooms Products Pvt Ltd. said “Industry at present, is in need of fresh minds with vibrant and modern ideas. The competition was initiated 7 years ago by the Roca group with this vision to charter the path of the industry to the next level. This has led to breakthrough discussions of ideas on designs and materials suited for bathrooms. Through this globally acclaimed platform, students and young architects will be able to create their own identity. We, as a company, are always on a lookout for new, innovative and sustainable concepts for the bathroom space. Last year saw participation from 110 countries with strong participation from India. More than 500 creative individuals participated from India last year and this time we expect a greater participation of fresh and sharp minds who think towards the future whilst designing today.”

Coinciding with the celebration of Roca´s centenary in 2017, the contest features important novelties such as the appointment of the German architect Patrik Schumacher, Principal of Zaha Hadid Architects, as President of the jury. Recognised for his architectural projects, he is also the author of the two volumes “The Autopoiesis of Architecture”, developing his professional career around the concept “Parametricism 2.0”, among other activities.

One other novelty in this year´s edition, which presents a new graphic image, is the increase in the prize to €10,000 in each of the categories (professional and student), as well as the incorporation of the We Are Water Foundation special sustainability prize worth €6,000.

The jury


Since the beginning, the jury of jumpthegap has stood out for the relevance of its members, gathering leading professionals from the fields of architecture and design. In this edition, the President of the jury is the renowned German architect Patrik Schumacher, Principal of Zaha Hadid Architects.

The other members of the jury are prestigious professionals from different countries around the world: Benedetta Tagliabue (Italy), Director of EMBT Miralles Tagliabue and President of jumpthegap second edition; Ma Yansong (China), 2014 “Young Global Leaders” (YGL) Award and President jumpthegap sixth edition; Vladimir Pirojkov (Russia), President of the Industrial Design and Innovation Centre ASTRAROSSA; Anjali Srinivasan (India), Director of the ChoChoMa studios and winner of the Swarovski Designer of the Future Award 2016; Valentin Vodev (Bulgaria), Designer and Founder Vodev Studio; Josep Congost (Spain), Roca Design and Innovation Director and Isabel Roig (Spain), Managing Director of BCD Barcelona Design Centre and former President of BEDA (Bureau of European Design Associations).

For the We Are Water Foundation prize, the members of the jury are: Xavier Torras (Spain), Director of the We Are Water Foundation; Henk Ovink (Netherlands), Special Envoy for International Water Affairs of the Netherlands; and Sophie Thomas (United Kingdom), Founding Director of Thomas.Matthews Agency.

Presentation event


The official presentation of the contest has counted on the participation of Xavier Torras, as Brand Communication Manager of Roca, Isabel Roig and Anjali Srinivasan.
