Boy weighing 130 kg with a torn knee ligament undergoes surgery successfully
· For the first time in Bihar, the revolutionary FiberTape technology used during arthroscopy
Patna, 5th September 2016: An overweight 16 yrs old boy , weighing 130 kg, who had a knee ligament injury, was recently treated at Paras HMRI Hospital, Patna, with the help of an arthroscopic surgery—a minimally invasive joint surgery. The critical surgery was performed under the supervision of Dr Arvind Prasad Gupta, Consultant, Orthopaedics (Sports Injury), who used the Fiber Tape in ligament for the first time in Bihar.
Lapkin Doni, a young boy from Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, tore his knee ligament after experiencing an injury a few days ago. He consulted a surgeon in Itanagar who tried arthroscopic but failed. He was then referred to Paras HMRI hospital, Patna, doctors gave him the right treatment and care.
“The patient came to our hospital with swelling and instability in the knee area. This was aggravated by the weight that the knees had to bear due to the extra weight carried. It is difficult for us to operate upon a torn ligament in these cases, as there is a probability that the ligament may become lax again. However, we understood that skipping the entire surgery was not the way out. We performed a ligament reconstruction,” says Dr Arvind Prasad Gupta, Consultant, Orthopaedics (Sports Injury), Paras HMRI Hospital, Patna.
Arthroscopy is a surgical practice performed through small incisions, where surgeons use a tiny telescopic camera along with a light source to look inside the joints. The procedure needs a super-specialization in sports medicine, and dedicated care during rehabilitation, both of which Paras HMRI, Patna, provides.
“For the first time in Bihar, I used a FiberTape during this operation. This is an ultra high-strength tape that is added to the ligament. It helps in its repair and ensures that the reconstructed ligament doesn’t get loose in the near future. The technique originates from France, and uses a tape made of silicone elastic fiber and a non-elastic fiber. Overall, it was a complex, challenging, and one-of-its-kind surgery, but I am glad to share that the outcome was quite satisfying for the patient,” adds Dr Arvind.
Dr Arvind is a veteran super-specialist and has done more than 500 successful arthroscopic surgeries of the knee and shoulder in the past. However, with this surgery, he has pioneered the implementation of Fiber Tape technique in Indian arthroscopic surgery.
