Said Samir Somaiya, President, Somaiya Vidyavihar “Somaiya Sports Academy, is an extension of our belief in holistic development of students and our commitment to contributing to the community. We believe that there is an urgent need in Mumbai for creating accessible spaces for sports, both from the perspective of competitive training as well as for inculcating the habit of sports. Sports,  besides being needed for a healthy body, teaches teamwork, the pursuit of perfection and championship.  Family relations and friendships, community togetherness that builds with the camaraderie of sports is special.

Says Kedar Tembe, the Sports Director, Somaiya Sports Academy “It is an ideal facility to have an intensive coaching program, organize competitions and even let people in the city have a secure breathing space while they learn a skill or just spend some recreational time. Further, with almost all schools having roller skating coaching programs, students after achieving a certain level of competence, want to train on a full size track sharpen their skills further.”

The skating rink was inaugurated with an Open Speed Skating Tournament in which over 170 participants from ages under 5 to 14 participated, across 28 categories.
