CEO of the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), Mr. V. Anbu added, “BIEC was delighted to be a part of the first ever Global Exhibitions Day and join forces with international associations and industry veterans to promote the Indian exhibition industry to the next level. India is fast emerging as a global MICE destination. Many foreign events are making a foray into India. BIEC has been a pioneer in this sector and hosting such events. Uniting them under a common umbrella will lead to business development. BIEC will continue to promote and provide world class facilities for exhibition organizers and encourage the development of trade.”
As per IMF, India is a USD 2.1 trillion economy. It is expected to grow further in another 10 year timeframe. The Indian government has taken many initiatives to attract FDIs and position India as a global destination for manufacturing through its Make in India programme. The sentiments are definitely positive.

This however comes with a caveat. It is imperative to note that whereas developed nations have given top priority to their exhibition sector India is faced with the daunting task of according its exhibition sector an industry status and get more organized. As the exhibitions sector in India becomes organized it will be recognized as a major contributor to the trade and economy of the country. India’s exhibitions sector needs to tap into the enormous opportunities presented forth by its expanding economy.

There are numerous challenges. Apart from a few select venues India doesn’t have the necessary support infrastructure to make large-scale exhibitions a grand success. Improving the quality of services is a key factor which the industry needs to consider. Sustainability of the venues and shows also need to be consistently maintained.  With around 750 exhibitions being organized in a year India there is room for improvement. The new tourism policies and the stress given by the government to develop infrastructure and build new convention centres not only in Tier 1 but also in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities the number of exhibitions will go up in the future. The Global Exhibitions Day will definitely be a harbinger for this.
