“We rule that there was no negligence by the hospital in the services rendered, however on humanitarian grounds we ask the hospital to refund the patient the fees collected towards the procedure”, This was the judgement passed by a mock court set up on the lines of a consumer forum, and the case which was decided within an was an apparent negligence following a LASIK surgery. Sankara Academy of Vision (SAV) the educational initiative of Sankara Eye Hospitals recreated a Court in its premises with support from Fox Mandal a leading law firm in India.

This was as a part of “CHAKRAVYUH” a programme on Medico legal Aspects and Hospital Administration inassociation with Karnataka Ophthalmic Society (KOS) and Bangalore Ophthalmic Society (BOS).

Unlike a usual ophthalmological CME which would focus on new drugs or techniques to diagnose or treat conditions, the 100+ healthcare professionals across the state were exposed through a mix of talks and panel discussion onlatest legal &regulatory issues relevant to healthcare industry from consumer protection acts to the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH). Social Media is now a large part of our live, how best to leverage the same and the do’s and don’ts; quality&accreditation for the hospital& financial management were covered. The day ended with an interactive session with representatives from United Health Care and United India Insurance Co Ltd.

“Complicated Surgeries are a part of our life, but a call to appear in a Court of Law rattles us. The Mock Court gave us a good idea of how a Court in India works. The various panels gave us a lot of thought for introspection on how we conduct our practice beyond application of clinical skills,” shared a senior ophthalmologist at the meet.
