Bangalore, 26 Jan 2016: Today The Ugly Indian along with several residential associations in and around Basavanagar organized Walkathon to create awareness about beautifying Basavanagar.

The walk, which was flagged off from Adarsh Vista in Basavanagar was specifically organized to spread awareness on the ban being imposed by the BBMP on single use plastics, which include plastic carry bags, plastic cups and plates, and styrofoam containers.

The walk spearheaded by the residents of Tata Sherwood involved the participation of residents of all the communities in this area including Adarsh Vista villa owners association,  Samhita Square, Shoba Sunflower, Nobel House  and all the other layouts in the area.

The local Corporator, MLA, and BBMP Joint Commissioner have all been involved in this programme. The Corporator and BBMP Joint Commissioner joined the residents and participated in the walk.

Today after the walk groups of citizen volunteers went to shops in the neighborhood and informed them the need to abide by the law banning the use of plastic bags.

"It is sad that oceans have  more plastic than fish and roads have more plastc bags spread all over than beautiful trees. This walkathon has been organized to make people aware of this unfortunate truth," said Shailaja Yadawad from Adarsh Vista

Also the residents group decided that, once the law comes into effect after the
10th of February, the citizen volunteers will go with the health inspector to ensure compliance with the law and make sure nobody finds innovative ways of avoiding compliance.

"Citizens have to be more compassionate towards the environment and be united in their efforts. It's not enough just to follow the rules yourself but also protest when someone else is doing wrong after all earth is the only home we all have," said Manisha Aggarwal from Bougainvillea apartment owners' association.

"Spare the plastic cover, spread the green cover," concluded Srikanth Turlapati from Samhita square.
