Kalasindhu Academy for Dance and Related Arts presents Nirantara Narmada festival

Nirantara Narmada festival is a two day celebration of the life of Natyavisharade Guru Smt Narmada.  Known for her Nattuvangam skills and her creative choreographies, she has left behind several solo performing artists of caliber and teachers of repute in her students.

2017 is the tenth year, and Kalasindhu is honored to present two productions on the 11th and 12th   of March, 2017, at 6 PM, at the Shivarthreeshwara Center (JSS), 8th block Jayanagar, Bengaluru.

Her student Smt Poornima Gururaja, Director, Kalasindhu Academy of Dance, celebrates her artistry and life through the Nirantara Narmada Festival initiated in 2008. The festival has presented to the Bangalore audiences, artists of International repute such as Kalaimamani Nartaki Nataraj, Padmabhushan Alarmel Valli, Padma Shree Prathibha Prahlad, Padmabhushan Swapna Sundari, Kalaimamani Guru Smt Rhadha, Padmabhushan Prof. C.V. Chandrasekhar and Padma Shree Leela Samson, Karnataka Kalashri Guru Vasundhara Doreswamy and Kalashri Smt. Usha Datar.

Karnataka has had a history of patronizing artists from different geographies at different periods. Celebrating this pluralism of the arts in Karnataka this year’s Nirantara Narmada celebrates Karnataka and Tanjavoor, the two main cultural hubs of dance and music in the 19th century.

The Tanjore Quartet was patronized by the Mysore Royalty. The legendary Guru Kittappa Pillai himself started his teaching career in Karnataka and lived here for 30 years.   Guru Narmada and Poornima Gururaja have practiced the Mysore style and the Tanjavoor style, creating a lineage and Parampara of their own. This year’s presentations are an ode to this dualism within the Parampara.

“Karnataka Kala Taranga”, is a art history presentation that portrays glimpses of royalties of Karnataka that have patronized the arts over several centuries ending in the court traditions of the Wodeyar’s.

The work is choreographed by Bangalore’s pioneer researcher and dancer, Director of the Nupura School of Dance, Smt Lalitha Srinivasan. She was commissioned to choreograph this production for Kalasindhu in association with Nupura (her own institution), keeping in mind the purity of pedagogy she has imbibed being a disciple of Padmabhushan Smt. Venkatalakshamma, a sani of the Mysore court.

It is produced and presented by Poornima Gururaja, Director, Kalasindhu Academy of Dance, Bengaluru. The presentation is on the 11th of March.

The second day’s presentation celebrates the Guru-Shishya Parampara. Guru Kittappa Pillai’s son Shri Chadrashekaran conducts and his grand daughter Charumathi dances the first half of the evening throwing light on the continuity of tradition within the family. Kalasindhu presents the Guru Stuti  a rare piece composed by the Tanjore Quartet as “Guru Dakshina” to Muttuswamy Dixitar.

The second half is an ode to the musical genius Muthusamy Dixitar, who is the Guru of the  Tanjore Quartet. His influence on their musical compositions are unquestioned. The Panchabhoota Kriti’s of Dixitar are presented by five  senior disciples of Guru Narmada who all run institutions of repute in Bangalore. The production is titled “Kshetra Darshanam, Panchabhoota Lingam".

Entry to the event is free.
