AAPI announces plans for hosting its 11th Global Health Summit in Kolkata



    Kolkata, Jan 11, 2017, American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, AAPI announces plans for hosting its 11th Global health Summit in Kolkata from Jan 2 to 4, 2018 and major initiatives for engaging with Healthcare professionals and Govt. of West Bengal in collaboration with Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare and several leading professional associations to enhance skills, exchange of knowledge and best practices towards our lofty vision of addressing major disease states and making quality healthcare affordable and accessible to all people.

To support this endeavor AAPI will bring together the best minds in medicine from India and the United States to collaborate and develop cutting edge, practical and India centric solutions.Here are some of the key initiatives that will be undertaken:

1.Road Safety: Increasing number of fatalities due to traffic accidents is a major cause of concern. AAPI in collaboration with several leading experts from India has developed the treatment and management guidelines for head injury and will be glad to work with the Government of West Bengal in evaluating and conducting a pilot to implement these guidelines that have proven to reduce mortality.

2.CPR Training for Police: In addition, we can initiate the training of Traffic Police on CPR as they are generally the first at the site of accidents. CPR when administered correctly and on time has proven to stabilize victims until further help arrives.

3.International Research Competition: AAPI in collaboration with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences will be conducting its sixth International Research Competition to encourage innovation amongst young post graduate students. Several hundred students are anticipated to participate and the top abstracts/poster presentations will be recognized and presented with certificate and cash awards.

4.Skills Development Training: AAPI along with local experts will initiate collaboration with prominent Medical Institutions in the US to conduct joint training and skill development workshops for all healthcare professionals. Electrophysiology, Oncology, GI are some examples.

5.GHS 2018 will bring the best and internationally renowned faculty to conduct plenary scientific
sessions on key disease states: Diabetes, Hypertension, Stroke, Cardiovascular Diseases, Maternal & Child Health, GI and Infectious Diseases. Audience response systems will be utilized to make these sessions highly interactive and educational.

   At the press conference, Gautam Samadder, President Elect of AAPI USA introduced AAPI and its vision and their plans for the Global Summit in India to help the healthcare sector of the country. Dr. Santanu Sen, General Secretary of IMA, West Bengal, vocalized that healthcare is developing rapidly in West Bengal and the Government plans to open new medical colleges across the state. He advocated that the noble intentions of AAPI are the reason for IMA to associate with them. Dr. Kali Pradip Chaudhuri, Founder and Chairman of KPC Group, further emphasized how honored and proud KPC Medical College & Hospital is to have associated with AAPI. Other eminent speakers present at the conference namely, Dr. Naresh Parik, Dr. Arun Pramanik, Dr. Sashi Sha, Dr. Raj Bhiyani & Dr. Amit Bhattacharya unanimously voiced the noble cause of AAPI for developing healthcare in India and expressed their full support and co-operation to AAPI in their endeavor.

Gautam Samadder MD, F.C.C.P, DABSM

Gautam Samadder hails from Jabalpur (M.P). After graduating from Government Medical College, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine (Mount Sinai affiliate hospital-North General, New York), Pulmonary fellowship (SUNY affiliate-Brookdale hospital, New York) and Sleep Fellowship (Medical college of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia).Gautam met his wife Anjana in Calcutta, who is currently a G.I Physician in Columbus, Ohio. She is also the President of AAPI – Central Ohio and active Governing Body member.

Gautam is the founder CEO and managing director of Columbus Sleep Consultant. He spear-headed the formation of Indian Sleep Society promoting sleep research and publications within Asian Indian communities. He is a speaker for several pharmaceutical companies and the physician advisor to several medical technology companies and recently collaborated with Fisher and Paykel to establish diagnostic centers in several major cities in India.

He is actively involved with the Indian Community and member at large of the Asian Indian Alliance. He is also diligently involved with the Bharatya Hindu Temple and free health clinics.

He is a core member of the Advisory board of the Ohio State University Gateway Project which supports exchange programs between USA and India including student’s scholarships.
He is also an active member of the Ohio State Medical Association and was the first counselor of the International Medical Graduates for the state of Ohio.

Hon. Shri Dinesh Trivedi
Former Union Minister of Railways and Former Union Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare

Dinesh Trivedi is the former Union Minister of Railways and Former Union Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare. He is also the Chairman of the Indo-European Union Parliamentary Forum (IEUPF), and other Parliamentary Forums. Mr.Trivedi did his schooling from boarding schools in Himachal Pradesh before graduating in commerce from St. Xaviers College, Kolkata. He then completed his MBA from The University of Austin, Texas.

Mr. Trivedi worked in Chicago for two years for the Detex Company, before returning to India, where he worked for a logistics provider Lee and Muirhead. A trained pilot, he then started his own air freight company based in Kolkata. He also started a consumer protection centre.

Dr. Prof. Bhabhotosh Biswas
Vice Chancellor West Bengal University of Health Sciences

 Dr Biswas graduated (MBBS) from R.G.Kar Medical College, Kolkata, India and trained in General Surgery (MS, DNB) as well as Cardio Thoracic Surgery (M.Ch). He completed his advanced training in Adult Cardiac Surgery & Cardiac Transplant in Cleveland Clinic Foundation, USA. Subsequently, he studied diverse subjects relating to human society and acquired degrees in Law (LLB, LLM), Management (MBA), Social Services (MSW) and Education


(M.A).
He has gathered extensive administrative experience by working in various capacities in different institutions, regulatory bodies, as well as government & non-government organizations.

During the last three decades Dr. Biswas has worked wholeheartedly for the improvement of medical education. He is the founder of the Thoracic & Cardio Vascular Research Centre, the open heart surgery unit of The Institute of Child Health and the Department of Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgery, R.G.Kar Medical College, Kolkata. He conceptualized and created graduate & post graduate level teaching and training programmes in paramedical sciences and has been the associate editor for quite a few medical journals. Dr Biswas has also won the prestigious Dr B.C Roy National Award.

Dr. Santanu Sen
Secretary General IMA West Bengal

A well-known Kolkata resident, Dr. Santanu Sen is the Councilor in Ward no.02 of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. He is associated with organizational work of the TMC since its inception. He is currently the State General Secretary of Trinamool Youth Congress under the leadership of Mr. Suvendu Adhikari(MP).

Dr. Sen was elected the Vice president of R.G.Kar Medical College and Hospital student union at the age of 20. He is known for his administrative, organizational, social capabilities. He is the member of the governing body of R.G.Kar Medical College and is a panel Visiting Doctor of CAB and is a member of Mohunbagan Club, East Bengal Club & Cossipore Club.

In his 10 months period as a Councilor, Dr. Sen has taken various development programmes and sanctioned funds for his Ward from KMC and BEUP. He has developed various sectors such as Street Lighting, Municipal Health Clinic, Municipal Schools, School, Library, Park, Play Ground, and Street Name Board etc. He also runs a charitable organization Disha Medihelp.

Mr. Anwar Feroz Siddiqi
Chief Strategy Adviser, AAPI USA

Anwar has over 30 years of experience in the healthcare sector and has worked in three countries, starting with India, Canada and since 1995 in the United States. Anwar has worked with some of the largest and leading multinational healthcare organizations such as Johnson & Johnson and Rhone Poulenc. He has held leadership roles in sales and marketing. Anwar is a citizen of the United States of America and Canada.

Anwar’s steadfast focus and his passion for improving quality, delivery and access to healthcare is recognized through the appointments he has held on the National Educational Advisory Committee of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), National



Advisory Council for Long Term Care, with the American Medical Directors Association 

(AMDA), Board member for the American Medical Directors Association (Foundation) and as a Delegate, to the White House Conference on Aging in 2005, advising the congress and senate on the future of aging in America.

Anwar Feroz Siddiqi is President, Association of Indians in America, SJ (AIA-SJ) where he has devoted his efforts towards promoting Mahatma Gandhi’s message on peace, nonviolence and racial harmony through an art and writing contest open to all middle and high school students in the state of New Jersey, focused on Gandhi’s famous quotes.

As a Hon. Advisor of AAPI (USA), Anwar has advised AAPI leadership and led the coordination for ten major Indo-US / Global Healthcare Summits in India since 2007, where leading medical experts of India origin convened to share best practices and develop proposals for prevention, treatment and management of disease states that are most important to the people of India.

Anwar currently serves as Board member with the Association for Advancement of Mental Health (AAMH), Princeton, NJ, the Visiting Nurses Association of Mercer County, NJ and serves as Hon. Advisor to the American (AAPI.USA) British (BAPIO) and Global (GAPIO) Associations of Physicians of India origin.

Dr. Shakti Kumar Gupta
Medical Superintendent Dr R P Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi

Dr. Shakti Kumar Gupta did his MBBS from Govt. Medical College, Jammu (1979) and obtained his MHA degree from AIIMS(1989) New Delhi. A recipient of WHO fellowship to USA(1997), Dr. Shakti Gupta represented the country in the East West Meeting on Telemedicine organized by Asian Productivity Organization, Japan at Hawai, USA(1998).

He has been awarded Pratibhashri Samman – 2002 from “Arvaheen Education and Cultural Organization”. He has also been elected as Distinguished Fellow of Institute of Hospital Engineering, PGIMER, Chandigarh (2004) and Member National Academy of Medical Sciences (2004).

Medical Council of India has appointed him as Inspector for recognition of Post Graduate courses in the discipline of Hospital Administration & Chairman for revising course curriculum for MD Hospital Administration. He was also appointed as International consultant on Procurement & Supply Management India TB & HIV/AIDS Programs supported by Global Fund under UNOPS Asia Office Project (UN Assignment) at Delhi.


He has been nominated as a Member of the National Board for Accreditation of Hospitals.

Dr. Gupta is the Editor of the Journal of Academy of Hospital Administration and Consultant Editor of JK Science- Journal of Medical Education & Research.

He has been nominated expert by Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, for preparation of training module/curriculum for in-service training of Hospital Managers and Professionals in disaster management.

He has been invited by Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad to associate in the research activities conducted by Center for Management of Health Services, IIM, Ahmedabad

Dr. Gupta is also a member of the Bureau of Indian Standards for developing Indian standards for hospital equipment management and quality assurance standards for patient care services. Member of the Core-Group for developing Curriculum for Diploma course in Health and Environment for Medical and Allied Health Professionals sponsored by ACTS Ministries, Bangalore in collaboration with School of Health Sciences, Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi.

He has organized various National and International Conferences and Workshops and conducted WHO and World Bank Projects.

He has about 33 research papers to his credit and has also authored three books “Hospital and Health Care Administration – Appraisal and Referral Treatise”, “Hospital Stores Management – An Integrated Approach” & “Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Management – A Holistic Approach”.

Dr. Gupta is a visionary professor and former HoD, Department of Hospital Administration, AIIMS.  His primary area of interest is health care operation and management with special emphasis on investigating the impact of operations decisions related to positive outcomes.
