9th edition of Bengaluru International Film Festival will be held in Bengaluru and Mysuru

The 9th edition of Bengaluru International Film Festival will be held in Bengaluru and Mysuru Simultaneously. The Inauguration of the Festival will be held on the evening of Thursday, February 2, 2017, at Bengaluru. Closing Ceremony and award distribution on the evening of Thursday February 9, 2017, at Mysuru.


Regular screenings for the Delegates will commence on February 3, 2017


The screenings will be held at 11 screens – PVR CinemasORION MALL, Rajajinagar, Bengaluru and

4 screens -INOX Cinemas, Mall of Mysuru,

The Content of the Festival: Total about 180films – Nearly 50 Countries - under various categories

1.Competition Sections : Asian Competition

Lists of films selected for the competition section will be announced in the first week of

January 2017.    Like in the previous edition, there will also be an additional International

Jury for Kannada Cinema which will culminate in a special NETPAC (Network for

Promotion of Asia and Pacific Cinema) award. A new International Critics Jury will be

installed for Indian Cinema.

Quite a good number of films in Asian Category and rest of the World  have reputation of having participated in other major international film festivals of Berlin, Cannes, Toronto, Goa, Mumbai, Kerala etc.,


Films made by world renowned filmmakers such as  Zoltan Fabri from Hungary, Ken Loach from UK, Asghar Farhadi from Iran, Kim Ki Duk from Korea, Cristian Mungiu from Romania and others are being screened in the event.


BIFFES has two special sections: FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics)Film Critics Award Winners and NETPAC Award winners, which are always the unique features of our event.


Special thematic sections include “Cult Comedies” from France and “Women Power”, a bouquet of films by women Directors from across the world.


Documentary films section was started from the previous edition.  In this edition of the festival the section is being curated by Ace Cinematographer Mr. G.S. Bhaskar and Documentary film maker Mr. Vinod Raja by bringing a retrospective of acclaimed American Cinematographer, Documentary film maker Haskell Wexler who passed away last year.


There will also be a special section on Biographical pictures  generally  referred to as “BIOPICS” which includes documentaries made on film makers, Writers, Artists , Musicians etc., The section includes films on Artist Van Gogh, Film Maker Fritz Lang, Poet Pablo Neruda,  Kannada Scholar M. M. Kalburgi  amongst others.


Invited Delegates:


Invited delegates will include film makers, journalists, Film Critics, Film festival Programmers, Academicians etc., from across the world. Large participation of Foreign Consulate officials, Foreign cultural organization representatives in India from Delhi and Bengaluru is also expected.


Indian delegates include filmmakers, Film Festival organizers and critics from Bengal, Jammu, North East, Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala and Tamilnadu.


Workshops, Seminars and Master Classes will also be held during the course of the Festival.

The scheduled programmes are:


1. Dadasaheb Award Winner Late V.K. Murthy memorial lecture likely to be delivered by Mr. Chris Menges, the renowned British Cinematographer.

2. Workshop on Sound Design / Editing.

3. Special discussion on emerging technologies –various possibilities of adapting Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality in Film Festivals -  promoting culture with the Future Technology.

4. Seminar on “Gender Sensitivity” –“Response to Women Power” section in the festival.

5. Master Classes on Scripting, Documentary film making.

6. Round table on promotion of Asian Regional Cinema at various film festivals with new initiatives. – Online promotion and distribution.

7. Interaction between film makers and Critics on Film Criticism, Book release etc., by FIPRESCI, a global collective of film critics

8. Highlights of 60 years of Karnataka with special focus on Kannada cinema – A Panel review


All the above events are scheduled to be held in one of the screens at PVR cinemas.


Delegate Registration:

Delegate registration will commence from first week of January 2017 at: Office of the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy (BIFFes camp), Badami House, N.R. Square, Bengaluru 560002 and Information Department Office at Mysuru.

Online registration facility is also available. 

Delegate fee: Rs. 600/- for General  public, and Rs 300/- for Students, Film Society members, Senior citizens and KFCC film family.

About Karnataka Chalanchitra Academy:  Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy was formed by the Government of Karnataka in 2009 to promote film culture in Karnataka. The Academy has taken up several projects to develop a healthy film culture in the state and adopted the motto of promoting ‘Education in Cinema and Cinema in Education’. KCA has been conducting various academic activities like Script writing workshops, interaction with achievers in the field and Film Appreciation Courses in different parts of the state.  It has also promoted the establishment of district, institutional and campus film societies all over the state.
