25 Doctors from Paras Hospital, Gurgaon, Pledged to Donate Organs on Organ Donation Day

•    Doctors from the hospital who have personally seen patients waiting for weeks for organs, take this step, setting an example for society
•    Organs from one donor can save or help as many as 50 people

Gurgaon, 16 August 2016:
On Organ Donation , Doctors from Paras Hospital, Gurgaon,  stepped forward to donate their organs, in order to save lives. In the process, these 25 doctors, across different medical specialities, are setting an example for people to do the same. Some eminent names from the field are: : Dr Tapan Ghose, Director of Cardiology, Dr Mandeep, Head of Oncology, Dr Vivek Logani, Chief of Joint Replacement.

In fact, Paras Hospital actively counsels patients to pledge their organs too.

Dr P N Gupta, Chief of Nephrology, Paras Hospital, Gurgaon has pledged to donate his organs. In his address to the press, the doctor said, “India suffers from a huge burden of organ failure and we have an organ shortage crisis has deprived thousands of patients from getting a new life. Since the kidneys are the most commonly carried-out transplant, and I have personally seen many people wait for a match, I feel connected to the cause. It doesn’t occur to most people until their own near and dear ones are in need. This initiative is all about creating awareness about organ donation.”

The concept of organ donation involves pledging an organ or organs to patients who have end-state organ failure—i.e. they may die if a replacement is not found in time. Healthy organs from a brain-dead person are then transplanted from the donor to the recipient. Organs from one donor can save or help as many as 50 people. However, in India, just over 16,000 people have registered with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Association. The need is for 2,00,000 kidneys, 1,00,000 corneas, and 50,000 hearts annually.

“As a hospital, we, at Paras, feel that we have a responsibility not just to treat patients and look at sick-care. We believe that we have a greater responsibility to society, to educate people and create an awareness about important health-related messages. This prevents the kind of medical malpractice and illegal harvesting of organs that is rampant. We see organ donation as a philanthropic act that anyone with a healthy body can contribute to. In essence, it is the act of giving, and we are proud that our doctors have contributed to this,” says Dr. Neeraj Bishnoi, Facility Director, Paras Hospital, Gurgaon.
